GSM (Global System of Mobile comunications)

What is GSM?

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) leads the world as the fastest growing, most reliable and advanced digital technology available in the marketplace today. GSM provides integrated voice mail, high-speed data, fax, paging and short message services capabilities. GSM customers enjoy secure communications, and GSM offers unparalleled call privacy and fraud prevention. As members of the GSM Global Network, GSM subscribers can use their phones at home, across town, across the continent, or around the world (except for with country specific SIM cards). GSM operates on the multiple spectrum frequency bands used around the world - 1900MHZ, which is used in North America and 900MHz and 1800 MHz for other locations. Different mobile phone networks operate at different frequencies, which means that if you wish to use your mobile phone outside your home country, you generally need a handset that supports multiple frequency bands. Make sure that the celluar phone you are interested in is compatible with the GSM band of the country you will use it in. As a general Guideline:
Dual-band - A dual-band phone operates at both the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum. Dual-band works in Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and much of South America.
Tri-band - A tri-band phone operates on three frequency bands, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz, allowing you to use it in Europe, Africa, Asia, nearly all of North America, Australia and New Zealand.
Quad-band - A quad-band phone allows you to roam almost anywhere globally. It covers the 850 Mhz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency ranges. Many countries in South America only have 850 MHz GSM service while both 1900 MHZ and 850 MHz GSM services are supported in the USA. 99% of all countries use the GSM standard. WE believe eventually GSM will be the only cell phone standard in the world.
The GSM network provides the best digital wireless voice quality in the world today.
GSM Quad Band
GSM, the short form of Global System for Mobile Communications, is a leading digital cellular system. GSM mobile phones operate on narrow band Time Division Multi Access (TDMA) system, which allows eight simultaneous calls on the same frequency. It was first introduced in Finland in the year 1991 and by the end of 1997 GSM service became the accepted standard in over 100 countries around the world and is now the de facto standard in Europe and Asia. The TDMA technology is a multi-access digital transmission system by which, multi-users can access a single radio frequency (RF), without any interference. It works on providing individual time-slots to each of the users within each channel.
To this day, there are more than more than 690 GSM mobile networks across 213 countries and consists of 82.4% of all global mobile connections. According to statistics available there are more than 2 billion GSM mobile users in the world, with China having the largest users with more than 370 million, and Russia following with 145 million users. While US have 78 million, India has 83 million using the GSM service.
A mobile phone can be a bewildering affair for a traveler. It is mostly incompatibility with the network of your visiting country, since every country in the world has different frequency band of operation.
Almost all parts of the world operate on GSM technology, except USA and Canada. Originally GSM operated at a frequency of 900 MHz, which is being continuously upgraded and now works on 1,800 MHz service. With a GSM phone, you can access service in 212 different countries. Some of the mobile phones available in the United States and Canada operate on GSM, but most of them are of a different frequency band. The GSM service available in North America is of a totally different frequency of 1,900 MHz and sometimes 850 MHz, which is different from the standard of 1,800 MHz. Not all countries in the world use the standard 900/1,800 MHz GSM. The exceptions being, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, and some Central/South American countries, with some limited coverage of the standard GSM networks.
Today, mobile phones have become a part of daily living. We often wonder how we ever lived without them. Whether you are traveling on business or on a holiday, mobile phones offer incredible services during your journey. However, they also present some challenges, when you wonder if that mobile phone you have will work while you travel from one place to the other.
There are three bands on which the mobile transmission is based on, with different countries operating on a different frequency falling under different bands. Today, quad band mobile phones take away the fear in you, relieving you from that worry, if your mobile phone will work in UK.
The obvious convenience of having a mobile phone makes you feel safe where-ever you are, with the facility that it has to quick-access for help when you need it and talk to the people important to you. It is one of the most economical and essential life-long product in anyone's life today. Think about those olden days when you had to make a call from your hotel room. Think about the bill that you paid, just for your telephone calls. Now you have a mobile phone, a partner to your daily life. You can already feel the difference. Today, many of these phones are being offered with exceptional plans that may include, free airtime, cheaper long distance charges and in some cases cheaper international roaming charges. In India, for example, service providers have started to offer life time incoming calls on pre-paid sim cards of your mobile. Realising such a benefit, you feel comfortable that atleast you are available on your mobile phone. Prices are dropping every month, which started with a huge investment when mobile phones were first introduced.
Let us look at why all mobile phones are not compatible.
There are two explanations to this reason. The first one being that all service providers in this world do not operate on the same radio frequency band and encoding services. Therefore, when you travel to UK, your phone might not be compatible with the kind of frequencies that the service providers offer.
The second point is a bit complicated. To enable a mobile phone from the United States to work in UK, the service providers in UK, or vice-versa, must have a cross-billing arrangement with one or more service providers in the other country. This cross-billing arrangement is a commercial deal between the service providers of the two countries, which results in allowing roaming in your mobile phone. In some cases the roaming facility in your phone, needs to be activated by your service provider in US. If this is the case, then, you have to have roaming enabled before you go out of the country. This arrangement falls under International Roaming. The same is the case with National Roaming. Therefore, you need to have such a phone, which would accept all the three bands the service providers operates on in this word, and such a phone is the one with quad band features. Dual band phones on the other hand would work anywhere in the world except the Unites states.
Let us look at some of the problems with mobile phones in the United States. If you are in US and you have a mobile phone which you would like to have the international roaming facility, your best bet would be to sign up with service provider who provides GSM. The two major GSM service providers in US are T-Mobile and Cingular, with the consideration that AT&T has now been merged with Cingular.
This sounds like a perfect solution. You now have one phone which works all over the world. If you have decided on such an arrangement, it must be what you want. But, you need to consider that GSM service is quite limited in US. That takes you back a bit. No, there is no solution for that. To have your way, you will have to maintain two mobile phones, one with a major established network in US and a second; having the GSM service with roaming features.
GSM is a state-of-art technology, offering fax capability and Short Messaging Service (SMS). Most of the service providers offer e-mail to SMS feature, making it possible to receive important announcements and information over your mobile phone, viz., receiving flight updates and breaking news alerts. Many offer quick connectivity to ISDN services, there by allowing fast data transmission. The latest generation offers Global Packet Radio Service (GPRS), which enables you to connect to a high-speed data communication channel, faster than 9,600 bps.
We have discussed the limitation of GSM services available in US vis-à-vis roaming. We have also said that in order to over-come this limitation and avail international roaming as well, you would have to maintain two mobile phones, one with a major established network in US and the second; having the GSM service with the roaming features. Instead of maintaining a second phone, mobile phone rental service is also available. There are many outlets who would rent you these phones with perhaps certain terms, viz., you would need to get your relevant sim card from them.
The GSM has made roaming between operators a very common affair, facilitating the users to carry their mobile in almost every part of the world. GSM is considered to be a second generation (2G) mobile phone system.

What is a SIM card?
The SIM (Subscriber Information Module) card - a.k.a. "smart card" - holds all of a subscriber's personal information and phone settings. In essence, it is the subscriber's authorization to use the network. It also holds the phone number, personal security key and other data necessary for the handset to function. The card can be switched from phone to phone, making the new phone receive all calls to the subscriber's number. For more information about SIM cards, go to our Prepaid SIM Card FAQs page.

Where in the world can I use my GSM phone?
At the end of 2000, the GSM Alliance had signed agreements with 217 international carriers representing more than 100 countries. GSM customers can use their phone service at most of the tourist destinations in the world including Europe, Asia (except for Japan and Korea), Africa, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand, India, China and other countries and most major cities in the United States and Canada.

Will a 900MHz GSM phone work in the United States?
In most cases, no. 900MHz GSM services will work in Washington DC only. Since Washington DC is home to many foreign diplomats, special considerations have been given to the area. In the US, 1900 GSM service is available in most areas. Please be sure to check local carriers such as Voicestream or Cingular wireless to verify that there is coverage in your area.

What does unlocked mean?
Most cell phones that you would purchase are locked, meaning that you must use the provider's service for receiving phones calls. Since ours are unlocked, you can simply purchase the cell phone and purchase the SIM card elsewhere.

Are your GSM cell phones unlocked?
All our GSM mobile phones are FACTORY unlocked - they will work with any GSM SIM card from any country on earth - so you needn't be tied into any specific carrier or contract. Every time you change the SIM CARD the GSM phone becomes whatever the new SIM CARD is. I.E. a new telephone number, memory for credit, the ability to work in the new country etc.
If you got your CELL PHONE from a USA carrier (such as T-MOBILE, AT&T etc.) very likely it is LOCKED to their service and can't be used with any other service provider in the states or overseas. To determine if your phone is locked call your service provider and ask them. If they will not unlock it for you our phones are FACTORY UNLOCKED with all features always available, we rent and sell these phones. Often if your carrier will unlock your phone some of your phone's features are permanently disabled.
If you purchase a SIM CARD from us you will SAVE as much as 95% of what you can expect to pay for your outgoing calls through American companies such as Pacific Bell, AT&T, T-MOBILE, Cingular, GTE etc. For example, calling the states from England is just US 7 cents a minute. Incoming calls (from any and all countries on earth) are free for you to receive in 99% of all cases.

Where can I purchase a SIM card?
We offer prepaid SIM cards on our web site. To view our selection of prepaid SIM cards as well as recharge cards for existing SIM cards. Check our Prepaid SIM Card FAQs page for more information about SIM cards.

When will I get my phone number?
Unless indicated on the country specific web page, phone numbers are given when you purchase your SIM card. If you purchase an country specific SIM card, you will get an overseas number pertinent to that particular country. Swisscom international prepaid SIM cards have a Swiss phone number assigned to them.

Apple iPhone

Apple has upped its claim for the iPhone's battery life, now saying the touchscreen smart phone will offer an eight-hour talk time. It's also decided to ship the machine with a glass front in a bid to beat the scratches spotted by so many early iPod Nano buyers.

Both changes undoubtedly come from real-world testing and the development work that's gone into the iPhone hardware since Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the handset in January. Comments allegedly made by folk who'd had their hands on the iPhone earlier this year highlighted issues with both battery life and screen resilience, and Apple's statement today certainly lends verisimilitude to those claims.

So what's changed? Apple originally had the iPhone's single-charge longevity down as five hours' talk time, video playback time and web browsing time, and 16 hours' music playback. Today's revised figures up those number by up to 60 per cent: eight hours' talk time, six hours' browsing time, seven hours' video playback and 24 hours' music listening.

It's all highly theoretical, of course, as were Apple's original numbers. We're sure, under lab conditions, with the screen dimmed right down, the iPhone can deliver those new figures, but if the handset actually delivers them in the real world, it'll be the first smart phone that ever did match the promised spec.

As Apple admits: "All Battery claims are dependent upon network configuration and many other factors; actual results may vary."

Apple now has a better idea how many iPhones it's going to sell, and punching that into the company's humungous iPhone Excel spreadsheet reveals it can afford to fit a pricier, "optical-quality glass" panel on the front and either a bigger or a more advanced battery without too many negative effects.

Or it's simply decided it can't risk the reputation of a $600 handset on such factors and is taking the hit.

No word at the time of writing concerning either the envisaged availability of AT&T’s HTC Fuze or unit/plan pricing but, following this inadvertent leak we suspect that AT&T will act quickly to provide further details so as to ride on the back of gathering consumer interest.

We will, of course, offer any further update as and when they become available.

Google G1 Phone

British gadget fans will be able to get their hands on the first mobile phone powered by Google today, as the much-anticipated G1 goes on sale in the UK for the first time.

The G1, which is being sold by the phone network T-Mobile, will be available from the company's shops from as early as 7am – with thousands of people expected to queue in order be among the first buyers.

A T-Mobile spokeswoman told the Guardian that the company was not sure how great demand would be today, but said 25,000 people had registered their interest since the phone was unveiled in New York last month.

The G1 comes free with a £40-a-month contract and boasts a number of high-end features including global satellite positioning, wireless internet access and built-in support for a number of Google applications.

It is the internet giant's backing which has generated most interest, as the California company attempts to move into the lucrative mobile phone market and take on rivals such as Nokia, BlackBerry and Microsoft. But the G1's major competition looks set to be Apple's iPhone.

The launch represents a big gamble for Google, which has only recently started producing full-blown software rather than internet-based applications. But engineers based in California and London have been working on the phone system, called Android, for the past three years, and the company hopes that a number of manufacturers will sign up to use its software. Wider take-up will have to wait until next year, though, since T-Mobile has negotiated an exclusive 12-month deal to run Android on its phones.

Despite the excitement over the launch, reaction to the G1 so far has been mixed. Leading gadget blog Gizmodo said that it was not the finished article but represented "a good start", while technology review site CNET called it "weird"‚ and said it was "not quite there yet".

In the US, where the handset went on sale yesterday, retailers are already starting to slash the G1's price to boost sales.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

The iPhone being the hottest selling internet-connected multimedia smartphone designed and marketed by Apple Inc. with a flush multi-touch screen and a minimal hardware interface, created sensation and a tremendous market boost in the last quarter across the globe. But apple’s future dominance is bearing a question mark with upcoming competitors.

An official announcement first smartphone from Nokia based on the S60 platform with a touch screen. The main task before me is describe the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, not only from the standpoint of analyzing the market situation and unusual situation smartphone in relation to other decisions, which are present in the market, but in terms of the average user. This is much more valuable. In short, we can say only one: Nokia 5800 - not a panacea for all ills, not the killer of all other vehicles, not that any other in this way.

The phone itself is nicely built, feeling sturdy in the hand and the entire screen is easily reached. However, it's a little bit thick, and might cause the standard mobile bulge in the pocket if that's your method of carrying it around.

The development of sensory platform version was launched very, very long time, she had come to replace the platform S90, which are based on the Nokia 7700 and 7710 continued. Given the lack of big market, as well as the specificity of the devices since 7700 and has remained a test model for operators and did not go in retail sales does, but 7710 was sold in very small quantities, has claimed only in a narrow range of enthusiasts, who turned a blind eye to all the disadvantages of Staff.

Samsung New Realist

Samsung's GSMA World Congress press conference doesn't begin for another hour, but details of the company's new phones are popping up on the blogosphere. And in any case, it's hard to keep a product secret when you've plastered huge posters advertising it around the Fira de Barcelona.

According to a Korean news site, Samsung will release just four phones in Barcelona: the S8300 UltraTouch, the i8910 Omnia HD, the BeatDJ, and the BeatDisc. Preliminary details are as follows.

Samsung S8300 UltraTouch

The Ultra Touch has a 2.8-inch touch screen, an 8-megapixel camera, and Samsung's TouchWiz interface.

Samsung i8910 Omnia HD

The Omnia HD builds on the existing Omnia. It should offer HD video; an 8-megapixel camera, featuring HD-level play (Internal: QHD, external: HD); Wi-Fi; GPS; and 3G support.

Samsung BeatDJ

As its name denotes, the BeatDJ will have a music focus. The 2.8-inch touch display will support 16 million colors and will feature a scroll wheel designed to resemble a DJ's turntable. Features should include a 3-megapixel camera, an FM radio, stereo Bluetooth, a memory card slot, GPS, USB mass storage, quad-band GSM world support, and HSDPA 3G.

That's all we know right now. We'll report back soon with more details and photos.

Nokia Aeon

Nokia is set to charm the world with an absolute stunner of a phone. The new concept, christened Nokia Aeon, when launched for real is also being dubbed the iPhone Killer, for reas

The Aeon concept shown by Nokia has the keypad making way for a touchscreen and is extremely thin. Though it looks super delicate, it is believed that the Nokia Aeon will have all that needs to beat the Apple iPhone in a tough market, worldwide. The Finnish phone behemoth has reiterated that the Aeon is still in the design as R&D progresses fast.

If Nokia really manages to come out with a phone that resembles the design of the Aeon, it has the potential to really become the aspirational phone, instead of the iPhone. Apple is not a major power in the cell phone market outside US despite the iPhone being available in many countries now. On the other hand, Nokia is. All they need is a brilliant product, and the Nokia Aeon looks like it can do that. As you can see from the photos on this page, it is easy to fall in love with.

Nokia's research and development team have kicked it up a gear with an attractive "AEON" concept phone showing up in the R&D section of the company's website. The most prominent design feature of aeon is a touchscreen that stretches over the full surface area of the phone, similar to BenQ-Siemens's Black box concept phone we saw recently. Currently mobile technology isn't quite up to realizing this fantasy, but we'll sleep better tonight knowing that at least one of the cellphone industry's biggest names shares the same dream as we do BenQ's dream didn't count, unfortunately.

Nokia Aeon Nokia shown to the public through its website on the 'Research & Development'. A more brisk again is the issue that the phone will be produced in February this year. Although still limited only to the issue, but we can hope will see this in the mobile phone outlets, outlets in some time to come. Now that we can know about this phone is that the operational practice touchscreen technology so that the phone will be visible to the more sophisticated.

While the symbol "a" and "c" behind the series is still maintained as a characteristic that the product market for the United States and China, not as a series of product representation. Fate of a legendary series K and seems to have many fans will also be cut off.

Replace this name is visible through the start series latest SE. Series K sentris the camera has changed its name to C Series - Camera or shortness of Cyber-shot. While the G series that had appeared sunday, the platform represents the name of "Generation Web". Nokia N81

Nokia N81 Mobile Phone : At the Nokia press conference held in London, Nokia unveiled the new Nokia N81 mobile phone specifically optimized for entertainment, digital music and games. The Nokia N81 mobile phone offers dedicated music or gaming control keys, expanded memory, large LCD screen and extended battery performance to provide quick and easy access to entertainment content. With dedicated music and gaming keys, 3.5 mm headphone connector and 3G and WLAN connectivity, the Nokia N81 multimedia computer is a true mobile entertainment powerhouse. With a sleek, polished surface and keys that light up when you activate them, accessing content on the 3D multimedia menu is fast and intuitive.

In a nutshell: A possible alternative to the N95, the N81 comes with a fantastic 8 Gbytes of memory, outstandingly good music and games playing features, a superb high-res screen, 3G video calling and fast downloads, Wireless LAN, and an optional GPS module. Its camera can't match the best, and the phone feels a bit plasticky, but it's still worth considering.

The Nokia N81 is a very powerful multimedia device that is in some ways like the Nokia N95's little brother. Available in a choice of Cobalt Blue or Graphite Grey, it's a really nicely designed slide phone that's chunky and heavier than the N95, but slightly slimmer. The first thing that strikes you about the N81 is the huge number of keys and buttons! In addition to the usual number keys and Navi Wheel, there are dedicated keys for playing games and accessing music & video: play/pause, rewind, forward & stop. You'll either love this or hate it. We found that the whole user interface is built on the idea of complexity, as the menus and settings can be quite overwhelming, but offer full control over every aspect of the device. The N81 is very much a hard-core SmartPhone, and if this sounds like your kind of phone, then you'll love it to bits.

There are a few areas where the N81 can't keep up with the N95. The screen is the first thing that you notice: although it's a high quality display with 16.7 million colours and 320 x 240 pixel resolution (the same as the N95), the screen is physically about 15% smaller. More seriously, the camera is a poor cousin of the N95's 5 megapixel camera: the N81's camera has just 2 megapixels and lacks autofocus. So, if camera quality is important to you, you'd definitely be better off with the N95. SatNav is missing too, although the Nokia Wireless GPS module is available as an optional extra. The Nokia Maps application is included as standard. So really the shortcomings of the N81 compared with the N95 aren't too great.

Now let's take a closer look at what the N81 does have. The first feature that really differentiates the N81 from the competition is the whopping 8 Gbytes of internal memory. This is enough to store 2,000 music tracks. The N81 has a fantastic music player that can give the iPhone a run for its money. The music player supports all common music formats including MP3, AAC and WMA, as well as Windows Media DRM. Managing playlists is a breeze, and the device can synchronise music with Windows Media Player. There's a 5-band equaliser, support for Bluetooth stereo headsets and a 3.5mm headphone jack. In addition, the RealPlayer media player supports full-screen video playback. There's also a built-in FM radio with Visual Radio support that tells you what song is playing, and other info. Music lovers have everything that they could want from the N81.

The N81's other focus is gaming. We've already mentioned the dedicated games keys on the front. Games can be played in portrait or landscape mode, making full use of the fantastic 16.7 million colour display. The N81's secret is that it includes support for Nokia's NGage series of games. The choice of games is excellent and the quality of the 3D graphics is exceptional. If you're serious about games, then this is seriously highly recommended.

The list of what the N81 can do goes on ... it's a quadband 3G phone that supports video calls with a second front-facing video camera. It's fully equipped for wirefree use with Bluetooth and Wireless LAN support, voice-independent speech recognition and voice commands, automatic answering with a compatible headset or car kit, internet calls using VoIP, ... Really there isn't much that the N81 doesn't do, and being a Symbian phone the wealth of 3rd party applications that are available for download is huge.

As always with Symbian devices there's a tendency for the N81 to be slow or to freeze if pushed too hard, although the 8 Gbytes of memory certainly helps here. To really get the most out of the N81 you'll have to have used a SmartPhone before, or be prepared to invest time learning how to use it properly. If you don't like high-tech then keep well away, but if the music and games features appeal, then you'll do well with the N81.

Features of the Nokia N81 include:

  • Operating system: Series 60 version 3.1, Symbian 9.2
